I'm finding myself insanely attracted to this man who looks as if he could be my father. Gross?
Back from Flaming Lips. The best way to describe them is "good clean fun". Most memorable tidbits: "Do You Realize", orange confetti, and "She Don't Use Jelly".
During "Do You Realize" (most will remember this song by an ad on VHI a few years ago with terrific black and white graffics...I THINK it was VHI at least and I believe the artist also does art for Metric), my first thought was how it would be nice for another person to hear that song and think about me. The lyrics continue into "that you have the most beautiful face". Shortly after I wondered if I was extremely self absorbed and thought about the possibility of thinking about another person when I hear this song. Basically, this song made me long for what it is to be in love. Regrettably, at the moment this is not my situation. How many times in the span of most peoples' lives does this really happen? I'll be optimistic in saying that at 24, twice is definitely something to write home about.
The orange confetti! The little rectangular pieces blasted all over the crowd through out the show. I could do little else other than smile in some sort of two year old gaze. Carefully timed to errupt in the most poiniant moments of the songs, it was a nice touch to say the very least. Tara captured it beautifully:
She Don't Use Jelly. Okay, I'm pretty sure the first time I heard this song as a cover by Ben Folds Five. During my college years, also the napster age, I remember downloading this song and realizing it was actually penned by The Flaming Lips. I loved Ben Folds Five since around 14, but jesus this version with their guitars was awesome. They actually introed this song with a clip from that old Jon Stewart show of ye old MTV years that I barely remembered. These guys have been around for a while, and deservedly so.
Needless to say, I walked away from Disco Rodeo in complete and utter GLEE.
As luck would have it, I'm going to see The Flaming Lips tonight, at Disco Rodeo. Last week I received an email a coworker sent to all of the Durham office, explaining that he had a ticket he wouldn't be able to use. He'd purchased it very early on, only to find later that he had a conference to attend that would conflict with the show. As soon as I found out it was up for grabs, I was the first to respond, so it was mine. I wouldn't have purchased this ticket on my own-total cost with "fee" as it reads on the ticket (I hate those convenience charges) is $40. Heavens. What's the deal with these pricey tickets? I really like the Avett Brothers, but I refused to pay $20 to see them at Lincoln Theater. Maybe I just have no concept of how big they are, I don't know. I really think that any ticket $15 + is pushing it. I'd pay $18 if it was someone I really liked now, or perhaps $50 if James Brown could come back to life, be around 30 yrs old, and I could be transported to the 60s or 70s. $1000 for all Beatles (if I had a higher paying job, that is). That's as far as I'll go though.
On my return back from this concert ticket tangent....I'm excited about tonight. I've heard they are really entertaining with costumes and such-should be fun. Luckily Ele and Will were planning on going too, so I get to tag along with them. Opening bands are Stardeath and White Dwarfs, I may miss them though. Going to NOFO first for dinner for the first time tonight with Jon. Will report back tomorrow on the food.
P.S. I'm really into the new Avril Lavigne song, "Girlfriend". If you have heard it yet, you probably are too. Don't deny it, you love it. I love you for that.
